Our Story
The Homestay Helper started in 2020 when one of our founders — a Penang property owner himself — got tired of paying generic "property managers" who treated short-term rentals like long-term tenancies. Bookings were inconsistent, pricing was static, listings looked amateur, and guest reviews drifted into the low fours.
We started by managing our own portfolio properly: real dynamic pricing, photography that matched the property, around-the-clock automated guest guidance backed by our local team, and cleaning standards built around what actually triggers a 5-star review. Friends asked us to manage their units. Then their neighbours did. By 2023 we had crossed 50 properties; by 2026 we manage more than 120 listings across Penang Island and the mainland.
The Homestay Helper is our short-stay management team, and we sit inside a small group of Penang property-services companies — MyReno (rental-ready renovation & furnishing), MyRoom (co-living & room-rental management), and MyLoft (whole-unit long-term rental management). This means we can renovate, furnish, list, and operate a property largely in-house, without coordinating multiple external vendors.
Everything we publish on this site — the regulatory guides, the ROI worked examples, the cleaning cost breakdowns — comes directly from operating data across our managed portfolio. We don't write theoretical content; we write what we wish someone had written for us in 2020.
